About Henna (Mehandi):

Henna belongs to the privet plant family. Henna has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal properties and cosmetic properties. Henna is used for coloring the hair and conditioning the hair as well. Today henna is used for body art as well. Henna is a Persian word and describes a small flowering shrub (Lawsonia inermis). The plant is found all over the world including Australia, the Mediterranean, Africa and in Southern United States. The variety of henna plant varies from region to region and different plants have different coloring properties and the color of the powder also varies. Henna powder in its pure and natural form is a bright or deep green, khaki or brown. The color produced by pure natural henna ranges from orange to red, to black cherry and near black color. Pure black color is not produced by natural henna powder.

Henna powder is made from the leaves of the henna bushes. When manufactured in large quantities, the leaves are taken to the factory and machine ground. Normally henna powder is made by blending different types of henna leaves from different parts of a country or from different countries. After the leaves are ground the powder is sifted. If the powder is not properly sifted the henna powder will contain pieces of leaf. Finely sifted henna powder is life talc and contains no leaves. Finely sifted henna powder is best for cosmetic use. Henna powder colors the skin, when the dye is released as a result of the henna powder being mixed with water or lemon juice and being applied on the skin.

ehndi body art has been practiced for centuries in the Middle East, India and in some parts of Africa. Though generally mehndi is thought of as a woman’s forte, men in all the countries have practiced it as well. Mehndi is the art of creating designs on the skin using henna paste. These designs can be applied in different parts of the body. Traditionally mehndi is applied on the hands and feet. Today as mehndi has become popular in the West mehndi is applied on the upper arms, back, around the belly button and on the hands and feet.

Initially henna was applied in these countries to cool the body in the hot summers. Dots are applied on the palm of the hands of both men and women to cool the body. As time passed the users of henna began drawing patterns, which over a period of time became intricate designs that are popular today. The different cultures gave rise to different style of mehndi and different methods of application. Intricate and fine line designs were developed in Pakistan and India. Geometric patterns and designs became the specialty of Morocco. In Africa bold geometric shapes and patterns became popular. Mehndi patterns are applied with the help of gold rods, plastic cones, plastic bottles with tips, syringes and toothpicks etc. Today mehndi art has become a means of expression for the Mehndi artists.

Henna Paste

For henna powder to release the dye you will have to make a paste of the henna powder with water or lemon juice. There are a number of things that can be added to the henna powder to make a paste that will stain your skin or hair the color you desire. Most people follow a trial and error method and finally come up with a recipe that suits their needs. Given below is a basic henna paste recipe, you can try it out and add to it to suit your needs. To make henna paste or mehendi

1 cup boiling water

2 tablespoons black tea or coffee

3 tablespoons of sifted henna powder (make sure you sift the powder before making a paste)

1 teaspoon eucalyptus oil

Lemon-Sugar Glaze

Strained juice of ½ lemon

1 teaspoon sugar

Boil the water and add the tea or coffee powder and make a decoction. Let this decoction soak for a few hours. Strain the decoction to remove any particles of tea or coffee. Place the henna powder into a plastic or glass bowl and add eucalyptus oil. Now slowly add the tea/coffee decoction a little at a time and stir the mixture. Use the spoon to press the powder and water together. Make a smooth paste of the henna powder. Allow the paste to stand for 6 to 12 hours. The longer you allow the paste to stand the smoother the mixture will become. Now apply this paste in any design you want and wait till the mehndi is dry, but not cracking. Take a cotton ball and dab a little lemon-sugar glaze to keep the henna moist. Keep the henna on for as long as you want.

After you remove the henna paste design from your skin, try not to wet the area for as long as possible. It is best to leave henna overnight. Using lemon-sugar glaze will ensure that the mehndi stays overnight. The less you wash the colored area of your skin the longer the design will last. If the colored skin is constantly touching water then the color will fade quickly. Applying lotions or creams will cause the design to loose color. A henna tattoo cannot be removed; it will have to fade off on its own. The color may last on your skin for two or three weeks or longer.

Henna for Hair

Traditionally henna has been used for coloring hair for centuries in the Middle East and in India. Using henna for the hair is part of the normal beauty regime in these countries. Henna while coloring the hair conditions it as well. Henna is considered a very good natural conditioner for the hair. Henna strengthens the hair. It has anti fungal properties that help in the reduction of dandruff. Once you use henna on your hair it is easier to detangle and your hair is more manageable. Henna is a natural dye and henna dyes your hair a beautiful and natural red.

Henna is natural and therefore does not dye your hair like synthetic dyes. Henna coats the hair with a transparent red coloring. As you repeatedly apply henna on your hair, the color of your hair will get deeper. Henna cannot and does not lighten hair. On dark hair henna provides red and reddish highlights. When henna is applied on black or dark brown hair, the hair will be dyed auburn to burgundy with red highlights that will be visible in the sunlight. Henna will dye blond hair a natural red. Henna on red hair will make the hair a deeper red. Henna will dye white hair a natural red or a deep red. An advantage of using henna is that it is natural and therefore conditions and colors your hair in a natural and safe manner. Another great thing about using henna is that you can make a paste to suit your hair type. Some people who are concerned about their hair becoming dry add special essential oils to their henna paste. People add floral water, eggs and other natural dyes to their pastes in order to create the perfect paste.

Henna for Body Painting

The leaves of the henna plant have been used for centuries, in the Middle East and India, to create beautiful intricate temporary body art. Henna when applied on the surface of the skin, stains the outer skin an orange-brown and this color normally lasts for about a month. The color of the henna will wear off completely over a period of time. Today henna is increasingly being used for body painting. The duration for which the color of henna lasts depends on the skin type and the type of care you take. A body painting can last between four to six weeks. If you use lotions, swim and soak in the bathtub then the color will wear off quickly.

Traditionally henna is applied on the hair, hands and feet. But today modern henna art is done on any non-bending area of the skin. Artists today make henna tattoos on the arms as armbands; intricate henna art is done around the navel as well. Henna tattoos can be made on a person’s back. Henna tattoos or body art is a good option as they are not permanent and you can experiment, especially if you are unsure about how it will look. Using henna for body art is not painful, as it is applied on the surface on the skin and not injected into the skin. Some people have reactions to henna body art. This is normally because of the oils that are added to the henna paste and not to the henna per se. Some people have contact dermatitis that manifests in the form of an itchy rash. If the paste has been applied for a short while then it can be washed off and will leave a very pale stain. But if the henna paste has been worn for a long time or overnight it will take about 4 weeks for the orange-brown color to wash off.

The laser emits an invisible light which penetrates the skin without damaging
it; it is then absorbed by the pigments of the pilous follicle. The laser
light selectively absorbed by the follicle damages its functions and impairs
its ability to fabricate hair. At the level of the pilous follicle, the laser
light absorbed by the pigments is then transformed into heat which damages the
hair but not the surrounding skin.

Laser hair removal is an effective and proven method. Laser can be used as a
medical device since it can be exactly tuned according to each patient’s type
of skin, guaranteeing an effective treatment. Observance of instructions and
precautions are essential for safe treatment. Thus, the use of a powerful
device adapted to each skin type allows for effective and safe treatment.

 • Shaving
Shaving is the simplest method but it is tiresome and must be performed almost
daily.

 • Mechanical hair removal methods
– Hair removal with tweezers
Hair removal with tweezers can only be used for small areas of the body. All
manual hair removal methods involve a risk of pushing hair under the skin and
lead to the formation of red and itchy "pimples".
– Waxing
This ancestral method must be performed every other week, presents a risk of
burning, ingrown hair and infection when using non disposable wax.
– Chemical hair removal
Creams and foams containing thioglycolates are effective and totally safe if
appropriately used. There is a risk of caustic burn if the sell-by date is not
complied with, according to the areas of the body. We recommend against the
use of chemical hair removal products containing soda-derived substances.

 • "Permanent" hair removal methods
– Electric hair removal
Until recently, electric hair removal was the only method allowing for
prolonged removal of unsightly hair. The doctor inserts a very fine needle in
the hair to "coagulate" its bulb. The process is effective but very long and
tiresome, treatment often lasting several years.
– Electrolysis
This technique used in English-speaking countries is not very well known in
France, its effectiveness is comparable to that of electrical hair removal
used in France.

Laser hair removal is a technique that makes it possible to treat rapidly and
One generally speaks of extended periods of hair removal, with a decrease in
the amount of hair and in their diameter. Thus, after each session and
according to the area of the body involved, one can notice increasingly long
periods in-between hair removal sessions (4-6 weeks at the beginning and
several months after some sessions). On the whole and after several sessions,
hair removal is virtually complete.

The treatment involves a series of impulses leading to a feeling of prickling
who want it can benefit from a cream- based topical anaesthesia. In the few
minutes following the treatment, the skin of the treated area turns slightly
pink, and you might feel a little sunburned for a couple of days.

Each impulse of the laser treats a surface of approximately two square
The number of sessions necessarily depends on various parameters, the most
important of which being the localization of the area to be treated and
gender. In addition, resting follicles are not damaged by the laser. In
general, it is necessary to foresee between three to six sessions, but it also

Here are some tips and secrets to be the perfect diva that you can try at home, without spending a fortune in the beauty parlors and wandering from beauty clinics and saloons. Remember, they are not to be passed on to your friends:

The hot tip to make your hair smell aromatic is to prepare your own hair perfume at home. Mix 6 tablespoons of powdered charcoal, 5 tablespoons of powdered myrrh and 1 tablespoon of powdered benzoin together and sieve it thoroughly. Add 2-3 drops of bergamot oil and 2-3 drops of sandalwood oil, 1 tablespoon of potassium nitrate and mucilage of tragacanth to the mixture until it acquires the consistency of a stiff paste. Heat the mixture over a water bath. Shape it into little cones and dry them. Whenever you wash your hair, light one of the cones while your hair is still damp and let them soak the smell of the cone.

A perfect way to get rid of dry, brittle, dull hair is to massage mayonnaise into your hair thoroughly, starting from the roots to the hair ends. Then pile your hair on top of your head and cover them fully with plastic food wrap. Wrap the pre-heated towel around it and keep it on for 10 minutes. This will help in deep-conditioning your hair. Now, replace the towel with another pre-heated towel and leave it on for 10 minutes too. Now remove all the wraps and shampoo your hair. This cholesterol treatment once a month for your hair is a boon that will keep it soft and shiny.

If you don’t have time to shampoo your oily hair daily, you can try this out. Pour some cornstarch into a dish and dip a clean, large blush brush into it. Brush your scalp and hair roots thoroughly with the cornstarch and leave it on for 10 minutes to soak off the oil. Then brush away the cornstarch flakes, ridding your hair with all that unwanted greasiness.

Make a mixture by adding ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 gallon of distilled water and store it in the refrigerator. Once a fortnight, shampoo and rinse your hair thoroughly and then pour 2 cups of the mixture over the scalp and let it saturate the hair. Rinse your hair with cold water to get rid of all the drab of hair styling products.

A possible cure for your impossible dandruff is vinegar. Massage it into your scalp and leave it to dry for a few minutes. Wash the hair thoroughly and repeat the process daily. Dandruff usually disappears within a few days.

The ancient Mayan women used avocados to keep their skin and hair healthy. Here is their infallible hair mask that you can use too – Mix ½ ripe avocado, 1 tbsp. olive oil, ½ small banana and 1 egg yolk together and massage it into your hair. Cover it with a plastic wrap and leave it on for one hour. Rinse the mask with warm water and then shampoo your hair thoroughly.

Say goodbye to your dandruff by dissolving 2 aspirins in your dandruff shampoo before washing your hair with it. Moisturize your hair with a good conditioner later.

Powder your greasy hair by putting it a little at the root of your hair before straying. For very oily hair, powder your hair heavily and keep it on for 15 minutes. Then wash the hair completely and condition lightly before making the desired style.

To bleach your hair naturally or just lighten their color, rub lemon juice on them and wander out for a walk in natural sunlight.

For decades now, women have been removing unwanted body hair, using different techniques. Not only does it add to the woman’s beauty but it is better for her personal hygiene as well. Today getting rid of unwanted hair has become easier than ever. There are a number of easy techniques that you can use at home or you can visit a beauty parlor for professional treatment. Given below in some information about the different techniques that are available today.

Shaving: Shaving is a popular technique as it can be done at short notice and gives you instant results without much effort. Most women still continue to shave inspite of alternate techniques being available. This method is quick and cheap, though the hair grows back rapidly and when the hair grows back it is very coarse. You should soften the hair by washing the area with warm soapy water. Use light gentle strokes in the direction of the hair growth, to remove the hair. After you finish moisturize the skin. There are different kinds of razors, electrical, disposable, with twin blades and moisturizing strips. Choose one that suits you the best.

Hair Removal Creams: These creams are manufactured in such a way that they dissolve the hair. These creams have an ingredient called keratolytic that will damage the skin if it is left on for a long time. Use a patch test the first time you are using a cream. But there is no doubt that they make the skin hair free, smooth and soft.

Waxing: Though this method is a little painful, it is good to remove hair from the arms, legs and bikini line. Hair re-growth after waxing is slow and may take as much as two months. It is best to do a patch test for waxing as well. For best results one should continue waxing on a regular basis. Hair is removed from its root and when it re-grows it is finer. The problem with waxing is that the hair has to grow a little for waxing to be efficient. It helps to dust a little talcum powder on the area before waxing.

Sugaring: This technique is similar to waxing. Here the removal solution is warmed and then applied on the area required with the help of a palette knife. The solution is applied in the direction of the hair growth. Then a cotton strip is used to cover the solution and torn away in the opposite direction and thus the hair is removed. Hair re-growth takes about six to eight weeks and it is fine.

Electrolysis: This is a salon treatment and is expensive, but last longer and could be permanent as well. This requires a series of sittings if the results are to be good. A fine needle passes a very low electrical current into the hair follicle. After a session there will be slight swelling, redness and scarring which will take a few days to disappear.

Laser treatment: This is another salon-based treatment that is expensive too. You need a few sessions for good results. Black activating lotion is applied over the area, to enable the hair follicle to absorb the laser energy. In this technique the best results are got from people with thick body hair.
